Indonesia becomes the country which sent the biggest number of Peacekeeping Force troops to Lebanon. Currently, more than 1,400 Indonesian National Soldiers has been sent to join the Peacekeeping Force in the area. Such information was conveyed by the press release from the Garuda Contingent Task Force in Lebanon received by MOFA’s portal today (30/5).

The Indonesian Garuda Contingent in Lebanon, which is enlisted in the world peace mission UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon), is led by Colonel Adm Darmawan Bakti.

According to the Embassy of Indonesia in Beirut, the Garuda contingent participated in the ceremony held at the main ground of UNIFIL Cenotaph yesterday (29/5) to commemorate the Peacekeepers Day.

The UN Peacekeepers Day was first celebrated on 29 May 1948, to memorialize the sending of the first peacekeeping missions when the Arab-Israel war broke out. There have been many casualties from the peacekeeping corps in the efforts of creating world peace.

The Peacekeepers Day was commemorated throughout the peacekeeping missions’ area. In Lebanon, the celebration was coordinated by Force Commander/Head Mission UNIFIL Major General Paolo Serra from Italy.

The ceremony was led by Captain Caj Rahman Akbar, and was joined by the troops from 39 countries assigned in south Lebanon. The Commander of UNIFIL’s Garuda Contingent, who also took the post as the Commander of FHQSU XXVI-D1 taskforce, attended the event along with the representatives from each contingent, UNIFIL officials, and Lebanon’s government officers.
