Prabowo-Hatta to improve
traditional markets
The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Election Watch | Thu, June 19 2014, 10:41 AM
The secretary of the Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa presidential campaign team, Fadli Zon, has promised that the ticket will focus on improving traditional markets significantly if elected.
"We want to improve the traditional markets so they can compete with malls and large supermarkets. Traditional markets are one of Prabowo-Hatta's priorities," he said during an impromptu visit to Senen Market in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, as reported by kompas.com.
Fadli said he had chosen to visit Senen Market because of its historical significance.
"The markets support our economies, especially markets like Senen, which was established in 1974. Recently, Senen Market experienced a fire that burned 1,500 kiosks," he said.
He added that Senen Market’s facilities had improved significantly. There was now a section that was built like a supermarket in Blok IV. However, Fadli acknowledged that renting kiosks at the market could be expensive.
"We really want to rebuild markets with great facilities and low rent prices. There are a lot of markets that have already been improved but the rent is too high for traders," Fadli said.
The Prabowo-Hatta ticket is backed by a Gerindra Party-led coalition comprising the Golkar Party, the National Mandate Party (PAN), the United Development Party (PPP) and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), which could secure 292, or 45.3 percent, of the total 560 seats at the House of Representatives.
