Prabowo can win election, says survey

A survey commissioned by pollster Indo Barometer says presidential ticket Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa can win the 2014 election if its recent surge continues.

“It is possible for Prabowo-Hatta to win the election if its upward trend continues while at the same time, Joko “Jokowi” Widodo-Jusuf Kalla continues to suffer declining popularity,” said Indo Barometer executive director M. Qodari as quoted by Antara news agency in Jakarta on Sunday

He said based on results of an Indo Barometer survey conducted on June 16-22 and involving 1,200 respondents in 33 provinces across Indonesia, support for Jokowi-Kalla was 46 percent, still higher than Prabowo-Hatta's 42.6 percent.

Meanwhile, 11.3 percent of voters said they were undecided.

According to Qodari, the results showed Prabowo-Hatta were gaining. He went on to say that if Prabowo-Hatta’s upward trend continued, the candidate pair could win 53 percent of the vote in the July 9 election, surpassing Jokowi-Kalla with an estimated 47 percent.

On the contrary, Qodari said Jokowi-Kalla still had the best shot to win if the 11.3 percent of voters still undecided split their vote between the two tickets.

“In such a situation, Jokowi-Kalla could win 52 percent of vote, surpassing Prabowo-Hatta with only 48 percent,” he said. (gda/ebf)
