Whether you're a reader or a writer, making better use of your time is essential to the quality of your writing. Editing your own work is a crucial step in this process. Here are some ways to improve your editing skills:

1 - Stick with what works. If you find that something is slowing down your progress, don't try to fix it. Let it go until you have something else to work on.

2 - Edit away from the computer screen. A lot of people feel they need to be looking at their work while they edit it—but seeing what you're doing won't make you edit better, and using the computer might distract you from other tasks that can help you focus and prod yourself along.

3 - Start with the most obvious changes and then move down the list. So many people start so close to the end of their editing process that they miss the things they could be doing first—and then they end up getting frustrated when they can't get past those last few chapters.
